Recycling & Plastic Policy

On a personal level, the policy of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ has always been important to me. In my business, I aim to do the same where possible. There are a couple of ways we go about this, but there is only so much we can do. On this page, I will lay out what we do as a business, and what I do personally, to help try and reduce our overall impact on the planet.

Reduce

To start with, we try to reduce the amount of plastic we use. This is one reason we have so far avoided 3D printing, at least until an affordable and viable method of recycling plastic waste into filament becomes available to us. This is also one of the most difficult areas for us to address, given the amount of plastic in the modelling world.

One of our key aims is to reduce the amount of plastic we use in our diorama kits. We aim to use responsibly sourced wood, and earth-friendly materials in our diorama kits. Another is to reduce the plastic in our packaging. We will try and work with partners wo also try to use more sustainable packaging, and we only use recyclable materials like paper and cardboard in our own packaging where possible.

Reuse

Most of the plastic that does end up in our packaging is reused from other packaging. We take in, clean, and reuse all sorts of packaging to contain our goods. Padding is recycled from polystyrene from furniture and TVs, bubble wrap from various electronics, and even food containers.

The last one might ring alarm bells, but rest assured, we carefully clean and disinfect ALL packaging that we reuse, with even greater standards applied to food packaging. We do not use food containers that have been eaten out of, we primarily use ingredient containers.

On a personal note: I also reuse polystyrene in diorama models.
